The MTV Video Music Award (VMA or "Moon Man" Award) for Best Male Video, presented at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards (September 6, 2001) — won by Moby featuring Gwen Stefani for "South Side." Moby was present at the ceremony and accepted the award on stage during the live broadcast. One of music's most iconic trophies, the Moon Man statuette remains among the most recognizable awards in the entertainment industry. Accompanied by a handwritten letter of provenance signed by Taylor on MCT Management letterhead, and by an original Moby Play CD featuring a hand-drawn cartoon doodle by Moby.
The physical Moonman trophy was officially routed to MCT Management and Barry Taylor — Moby's personal manager and President of MCT — in accordance with standard MTV practice of the era, under which physical trophies were in some cases presented to the artist's management company rather than directly to the performer. The plaque is engraved to MCT accordingly.

[YouTube] Moby Wins Best Male Video · 2001 MTV VMAs (Broadcast Clip, 9/6/2001)
Historical Context
Moby (Richard Melville Hall) is a New York-based electronic musician whose 1999 album Play (V2 Records) became one of the most commercially successful electronic albums in history, notable for licensing every track to film, television, and advertising, and for generating a series of major crossover singles. "South Side," released in 2000 and featuring Gwen Stefani of No Doubt, was among its most prominent — a high-energy collaboration that reached the top ten in multiple markets and received a high-profile music video directed by Joseph Kahn. The video depicts Moby and Stefani in a music video production scenario, intercut with footage of the pair in a stark gray room.
The 2001 MTV Video Music Awards were held on September 6, 2001 — five days before the September 11 attacks — at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The event and broadcast stands as the last major entertainment event of the "pre-9/11" era.
The Best Male Video award was presented by the artists of the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack recording of "Lady Marmalade" — Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa, Pink, and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. The "Lady Marmalade" collaboration won Video of the Year at the same ceremony. Gwen Stefani appeared on both winning songs of the evening's gendered video categories: as featured artist on "South Side" (Best Male Video) and as featured artist on Eve's "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" (Best Female Video, Interscope, 2001) — a rare dual-category distinction.
"South Side" won Best Male Video over a competitive field that included Eminem featuring Dido — "Stan"; Lenny Kravitz — "Again"; Nelly — "Ride wit Me"; and Robbie Williams — "Rock DJ."
The award's context is inseparable from one of pop music's most documented celebrity feuds. Moby had publicly criticized Eminem's lyrics at the 2001 Grammy Awards earlier that year, calling them misogynistic and homophobic — and "South Side" then beat Eminem's "Stan" at the VMAs that September. Eminem responded the following year with a pointed diss aimed at Moby by name on "Without Me" (from The Eminem Show, 2002). The feud escalated at the 2002 MTV VMAs, where Eminem publicly challenged Moby to a fight from the stage — an exchange made more memorable when Eminem shoved aside Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (comedian Robert Smigel's hand puppet, who had been interviewing Moby moments earlier) on his way to the podium. Moby, characteristically unfazed, later said his primary concern was for Triumph's well-being. The feud remained a fixture of early-2000s pop culture for years. In February 2026, Moby revisited the history in an interview, acknowledging that a wry comment he made in an MTV interview — suggesting Eminem's hostility might mean he wanted to make out with him — may have further stoked the fire. He described Eminem as having proven himself to be progressive and smart over the subsequent decades.
This award, presented at the very ceremony where "South Side" beat "Stan", is therefore a primary artifact from the night that helped ignite the feud.
Although Moby accepted the award on stage during the live broadcast, the physical Moonman trophy was formally presented to MCT Management and Barry Taylor in accordance with standard MTV practice of that era. MTV routinely routed the physical hardware through artists' management companies rather than directly to the performers — management handled the business logistics of award submissions, shipping, insurance, and storage, with the plaque engraved to the management company as the official recipient on record. Taylor's role as both President of MCT and Moby's personal manager made him the designated recipient of the physical trophy. His signed letter explicitly confirms that he received the Moonman from MTV in 2001 in this capacity. This practice explains why many classic VMAs from this era ended up in the hands of managers rather than the artists themselves — and subsequently entered the memorabilia market through sales like the Julien's auction from which this piece was acquired.

3. Buyer’s Premium & Fees
A 20% Buyer's Premium is added to the hammer price of all lots, which includes the iCollector online service fee. An additional 3% credit card processing fee will be added at checkout for payments made by credit card; payments made by ACH or wire transfer are not subject to this fee.
4. Sales Tax
Applicable sales tax will be added to the purchase price as required by law based on the delivery location and the nature of the transaction.
5. As-Is / No Reliance
All property is sold AS IS, WHERE IS, with all faults. Descriptions, estimates, and opinions are statements of judgment, not guarantees. Buyers are responsible for their own inspection and evaluation. No warranty or representation is made as to condition, authenticity, provenance, completeness, or operability except as expressly stated. Electronic items are sold as-is, untested unless otherwise stated, and may not include power supplies, accessories, or cables unless specifically described and shown in photographs. Buyers acknowledge that iCollector may automatically charge the registered payment method on file within 24 hours of auction close. Payment is otherwise due within 5 calendar days of invoice. Payment is due within 5 calendar days of invoice unless otherwise stated. Failure to pay may result in cancellation of the sale, resale of the property, forfeiture of payments, and recovery of costs. NB reserves the right to charge the buyer’s registered payment method, assess late fees, and/or pursue legal remedies for non-payment. NB may reject future bids from any buyer who fails to complete a transaction. Although title passes at the fall of the hammer, NB retains a possessory lien on the property until full payment has been received and cleared. Property will not be released until payment clears. By registering to bid, buyers agree not to initiate chargebacks or payment reversals without first contacting NB to resolve any issue in good faith.
7. Shipping & Risk of Loss
Title and risk of loss pass to the buyer at the fall of the hammer. Property will be released for shipment or pickup only upon receipt of cleared payment in full. Shipping, insurance, handling, customs, and related costs are the buyer's responsibility. All packages shipped by NB will require signature confirmation upon delivery. Buyers are responsible for arranging shipment within a reasonable time after payment.
Full-value insurance is required on all shipped lots. Declared value for shipping insurance shall equal the hammer price plus buyer's premium; under-declaration is not permitted. All shipments must use carriers that provide signature confirmation and full declared-value coverage. For lots shipped in-house by NB, accepted carriers are UPS, FedEx and USPS Registered Mail only. For lots shipped via third-party providers, the buyer (or their chosen shipper) is responsible for selecting an appropriate carrier and arranging full-value insurance through that carrier or an independent insurer.
8. Shipping Options & Third-Party Handling
Shipping, handling, and insurance are not included in the Hammer Price or Buyer's Premium. All shipping and fulfillment costs are assessed separately and are the sole responsibility of the buyer.
NB offers in-house shipping for eligible lots, subject to availability and lot-specific requirements. NB reserves the right to require third-party shipping for any lot at its sole discretion, including but not limited to lots requiring specialized handling due to size, weight, fragility, value, or other considerations. Where third-party shipping is required, NB will provide contact information for one or more recommended providers, and the buyer may use a provider of their own choosing.
Regardless of shipping method, all shipments must comply with the insurance and carrier requirements set forth in Section 7. Risk of loss in transit lies with the buyer in all cases. Local pickup is available where applicable. Buyers should note that applicable sales tax may apply to transactions involving local pickup.
International buyers are solely responsible for compliance with all applicable import regulations, customs declarations, duties, and taxes. NB will accurately declare the full hammer price plus buyer's premium on all customs documentation. Requests to under-declare value, mark shipments as 'gift,' or otherwise misrepresent the transaction to customs authorities will be declined.
